Aluminum railing systems – what is worth knowing before choosing a system?

How to find balustrades that will last and look good for years?

Paweł Konkol, Morad expert, explains why aluminium balustrades are an investment that ensures longevity and resistance to difficult conditions.

Paweł Konkol, Morad expert

Today we would like to share with you our experience and accumulated knowledge gained over years of working with balustrades. Whether you are an architect, designer or developer – we hope you will find something here that will help you make better design decisions.

Our knowledge does not come only from books or technical specifications – it is the result of many years of work on various projects. Working with installers, we constantly improve our systems. Our goal is to simplify installation as much as possible, while maintaining the highest quality.

Aluminum balustrade is more than just protection

When we look at a balustrade, we often see only its basic function – to provide safety. But the truth is that a well-designed balustrade can change the character of the entire building. It can be a minimalistic addition to the facade or a distinctive accent that gives the building style. In each case, the key is to find a balance between aesthetics and functionality.

What makes a really good balustrade?

Good question, right? What can we say: from simple balconies in residential buildings to very complex structures in public buildings. One thing always repeats: a well-designed balustrade is much more than just protection. It is an element that defines the style of the entire building, affects its reception, and of course it must be durable, safe, must withstand wind, rain, snow, and sometimes even sea salt, if we are talking about seaside projects. The second issue is safety - after all, the balustrade is supposed to protect people, so there is no room for compromise here. And finally - it must look good. This is the element that is often the first to catch the eye.

Aluminum – why it?

I would rather ask: why not? Aluminum is a brilliant material – it is lightweight yet incredibly strong. It does not rust, so it works great in any climate. For example, our Morad systems are used in places where weather conditions are extreme – and they never fail. On top of all that, there is also the QUALICOAT standard finish. This is something that not only looks great, but also ensures that the balustrade will last for years in perfect condition. And I say this with full conviction, because I work with it every day. Its properties simply speak for themselves.

  • Corrosion resistance – This is probably one of the greatest advantages of aluminum. It simply does not rust. Moisture, rain, snow, salinity – none of these factors will harm it. That is why it works so well in coastal regions or in places with high humidity. In addition, there is additional protection in the form of powder coating in accordance with the QUALICOAT certificate. And if we are talking about really difficult conditions, it is worth reaching for the QUALICOAT SEASIDE coating, which provides even better protection against the effects of sea salt.
  • Lightness and durability – Aluminum is lightweight – a huge plus, as it makes transportation and assembly easier. But don’t be fooled – lightweight doesn’t mean it’s weak. Modern aluminum systems are designed to handle even very heavy loads. They are ideal for large terraces, balconies, or other structures that need to be solid and safe.
  • Personalization at the highest level – one of the things i really like about aluminum is how easy it is to adapt to different projects. it can be anodized, painted in any RAL color, or even finished to look like wood or stainless steel. this means it can suit almost any style – modern, classic, minimalist. the possibilities are virtually endless.

What does this mean for the investor and designer?

Okay, you say: "“That sounds great, but what’s in it for me?” Let me explain. Firstly, aluminium balustrades do not require additional maintenance for many years. They are resistant to moisture, salt or UV radiation, which makes them an ideal solution for seaside and difficult climatic conditions. Secondly, they maintain excellent aesthetics for years - you do not have to worry about renovation or painting.

Good advice: If you are planning an investment in coastal regions, always choose systems with QUALICOAT SEASIDE coating. This is a guarantee that the balustrades will look great and fulfill their functions for many years.

“But does aluminum look good against steel?”

We hear this question very often. Our answer? It depends on what you like. Steel has its raw, industrial character, but aluminum offers more finishing options. And it is easier to maintain - you don't have to worry that it will rust in a few years. And if you value the look of steel, but are looking for a lighter and more practical material, we recommend SLIM system. Thanks to its slim design and unique design, it perfectly imitates steel, eliminating problems such as welds or corrosion. It combines the aesthetics of steel with the comfort and durability of aluminum.

Easy assembly – the key to success

Do you know what else is important? Installation. For years we have worked with installers and thanks to this our systems are as user-friendly as possible. Fewer problems on the construction site, more peace of mind for the investor. This is one of those aspects that is often overlooked, but for me – as someone who knows what work on a construction site looks like – it is crucial.

Why systemic solutions?

Just a few years ago, most balustrades were made to measure on site. This meant more work, more stress, and a greater risk of errors. Today, we have balustrade systems that solve these problems. What's so special about them? Let me explain.

  • Modularity - let's take an example AB-OPTIMAL system – the flagship solution from Morad. These are ready-made components that can be quickly adjusted to different dimensions and shapes. The assembly process is therefore simpler and the risk of errors is minimal.
  • Versatility – one system, so many possibilities. Do you need a glass balustrade? Here you go. Do you prefer aluminum panels? No problem. All in one solution.
  • Aesthetics and consistency – each element of the system – from profiles to accessories – is designed to create a harmonious whole. In modern buildings, where every detail matters, this approach makes a difference.

An example from real life? We had a project where the client wanted a minimalist balustrade – only glass and as few visible elements as possible. Thanks to the system MORAD AB-S managed to create a structure that looked almost "invisible" and was at the same time solid and safe.

How does BIM technology support the design of balustrades?

If you work as an architect, you will definitely appreciate the BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology. Thanks BIM libraries you can add Morad systems to the project with one click. You can see immediately what they will look like, what dimensions and technical parameters they have. This is a huge time saver and certainty that the project is in line with reality. We try to make our libraries always up-to-date and helpful for architects.

Opinion from one of our clients: "For OPTIMAL balustrades the BIM file was very helpful. I would be very grateful if you could send me the BIM version of the SLIM system when it is available."

What to pay attention to when designing balustrades?

When designing balustrades, it is always worth remembering a few key issues:

  • Location - If the building is located in a coastal area, choose systems with a QUALICOAT SEASIDE coating. Aluminum itself is corrosion-resistant, but an additional protective layer means that no amount of saltiness can scare it.
  • Building function – In residential buildings, balustrades often have a decorative function, while in public buildings they are primarily protective. A well-chosen system can combine these two functions.
  • Safety standards – This is crucial. Each balustrade must meet the appropriate standards – whether it is load resistance or height. MORAD balustrade systems are designed to meet all requirements.

Every project is a new story

No two projects are the same, but in each case the balustrade plays its role. For example, in residential buildings it is often about something simple and functional. In public buildings – something more spectacular that will catch the eye. And in seaside investments? There, resistance to weather conditions is what counts above all.

Can a balustrade be unique?

In my opinion – yes. That is why we always approach the subject individually. Each project is different, and our task is to provide solutions that not only meet the requirements, but also add that “something” to the building.

And now to you

If you are thinking about a balustrade that is more than just a barrier, then I invite you to talk.
